No Gimmes

No Gimmes - in stroke play tournaments

 

We all hate this topic. 

 

First of all – this is stroke play. There are no gimmes in stroke play. Never has been, never will be. That means no taking, or giving, gimmes.

 

The problem is this. If one guys lips out a 14” inch putt and the group behind them gives that same putt then the integrity of the entire tournament is out of whack. 

 

We are playing for keeps, just like when you were a kid. That's the whole idea - to compete like when we were kids. You thought it was about the money? 

 

Taking gimmes in stroke play can do nothing but harm the entire club.

Not to mention the message it sends a new member looking for some good honest competition.

Taking a gimmes would result in disqualification in the stroke play tournament.

 

Final note on gimmes - if you have a side game then do what Linsky does – "Jimbo, that’s good in our game but you still need to putt it."
